Greenhouse Business For Sale Minneapolis
After 20 years growing our beautiful Orchids at this location (the oldest retailer of flowers in MN BTW still operating at original location robert stern 1904 - Orchids by Murphy 1992) - We have decided we would like to move our Orchid Operation to the Big Island of Hawaii! - This will make for an interesting opportunity for a lucky group to come in here to take over this greenhouse / floral operation!
Our property includes wonderful Albert Lauer built Greenhouses , the Lauer Family has been building the very best greenhouse in the world, since 1947 - A great, concrete block (survived the tornado - greenhouses and all with minimal damage!) building with recent Updates - and 2 empty city lots! (can you see wonderful, urban gardens on these lots???)
Located literally 6 minutes From DTN Minneapolis - A Great Central Twin Cities Location - Easy to get Everywhere!
Property Would Be Ideal For Sustainable Gardening - Year round!
Perhaps a unique Microbrewery? Literally... Grow Your Own Hops!
Could be used as a mixed use - perhaps Community Center - Coffee Shop - Many things possible to serve this robust community.

Our History…
The State Of Minnesota has a rich history of Floriculture, dating back to 1907 with the forming of the Twin City Florists’ and Gardener’s Club. This group became the state’s first Florists’ Association in 1908, led by Theodore Wirth, whom was a huge influence and architect of city of Minneapolis. Theodore Wirth (1863–1949) was instrumental in designing the Minneapolis system of parks. Swiss-born, he was widely regarded as the dean of the local parks movement in America. At the time he was the Minneapolis Park Board Superintendent of Parks, and a noted horticulturalist. Floriculture in Minnesota was off to a great start!
Minnesota Floriculture Pioneers and early Flower Pettlers
The very first “Bouquet Maker” in Minnesota, was Lyman M. Ford. He started his nursery in St. Paul’s Midway district in 1851, known as Groveland Garden and Nursery, and later Pioneer Greenhouse. There were a few other early greenhouse builders in the metro area, and of course Bachmans, South of the area. Developement and urban sprawl eventually took its toll on most of these facilities. As of july 31 2009, for floral retailing – Minneapolis Floral was the last standing of the original true 'florists', they have closed – effective August 01 2009 – Selling the busineess to Bachmans. They were the 3rd florist in the Twin Cities — A long history, and I am sure will be missed by many!
Now, the former, Robert Stern florsits, who’s boiler house smoke stack, was the tallest structure in Minneapolis prior to the building of the Foshay Tower, is now being run as Crystal Lake Floral Design & Orchids by Murphy, is the longest running floral retailer 'location' in town, followed by lindskoogs, and a handful of others, and then of course Bachman's in the 1920?s. Prior to the 20?s Bachman's sold primarily Produce.

With the Pending Closing, August 01 2009 of Minneapolis Floral, We will be the Florist and Flower Shop in Minneapolis with the longest uninterrupted run of retail flowers being sold in the city! -- Bachmans, Lindskoogs and all of the others came later! Some surprisingly - Much Much Later!
Three Families have owned our property since the late 1880's. The Bertelsons originally grew geraniums here at the corner of what was then 38th Avenue N & Humboldt. These plants were used as grave decorations for the Crystal Lake Cemetery.
The the Robert Stern Family, From Germany, built up several city blocks worth of Cypress wood and Glass Greenhouses and in 1904 became one of only a handful of retail Florists in Minneapolis - The Smoke Stack for the Coal Fired Boiler House was the Tallest Structure in Minneapolis until the Foshay Tower was built in 1929
In 1992 the now, Late, Sandra Murphy, dubbed the Twin Cities Orchid Lady (in memorium http://orchidblooms.com/) and her family, Purchased the 'Robert Stern Florists' then being run by the 3rd generations of Sterns, to grow Orchids in the Greenhouses that were rebuilt from wood to Aluminum and Steel in 1963 and continue the Retail Floral Sales. The business is now run by her husband Greg and son, me, Phillip Murphy now dubbed 'Phil the Minneapolis Florist'.
We hope to keep the longstanding tradition instilled into our very essence by Mom, of offering unique, fresh and affordable floral designs at affordable prices for many more years to come - God Willing!
Thank You For Visiting!
